Russia launched over 5,400 drones at Ukraine in June—the highest monthly total since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, according to official figures released by Ukraine’s Air Force.

Specifically, 5,438 drones were deployed in June, marking a 37% increase from May’s 3,974. Russia also launched 239 missiles, nearly double the number recorded the previous month.

Ukraine’s military reported that its air defenses successfully shot down or destroyed 86% of incoming drones and missiles, up from 81% in May.

While Russia insists it is targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure, many strikes continue to kill civilians and damage residential buildings. At least 41 civilians were killed in Kyiv alone in four separate airstrikes, compared to just two attacks in May.

The increased intensity of attacks has left residents in major Ukrainian cities sleepless and sheltering nightly in bunkers.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently claimed that drones are achieving a 50% success rate against Ukrainian armored vehicles and defensive positions. “The efficiency of drones is increasing,” he declared during a military briefing last month.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented that “Ukraine knows what it must do to end the fighting.”

Ukraine, meanwhile, has also intensified drone attacks deep inside Russian territory. Multiple people were injured in a drone strike at an industrial facility in Izhevsk, located 1,300 kilometers from the border.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated via Telegram on June 30 that Ukraine will “increase domestic drone production” and seek new foreign investments in long-range attack drones, interceptors, and other UAV technologies. “This is a top priority,” he emphasized. “Russia is investing heavily in drone capabilities and trying to expand the number of drones it can use to attack our country.”
