đź“„U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he leveraged tariff negotiations as a tool to pressure Thailand and Cambodia into agreeing to a ceasefire amid ongoing border clashes. According to Trump, both nations have agreed to meet immediately for talks aimed at achieving peace.

On July 26 (local time), President Trump announced on Truth Social that he had spoken with the leaders of both countries to mediate a ceasefire. He declared, “Both sides want an immediate ceasefire and peace,” adding that “they also want to return to the negotiating table on trade with the United States, but we believe it is inappropriate until the fighting stops.”

Trump further noted, “I look forward to signing trade agreements with both countries once peace is achieved,” expressing hope for long-term positive relations between Thailand and Cambodia.

He also warned that if either country fails to accept U.S. mediation, trade negotiations would be halted. Trump confirmed that letters have been sent to both governments announcing the imposition of a 36% tariff on goods from Cambodia and Thailand starting August 1. Both nations are currently in talks with Washington to reduce the rates.

Drawing a comparison to a previous successful mediation between India and Pakistan in April, Trump claimed that his use of trade leverage had led to a peaceful resolution in that dispute.

Trump’s strategy of linking trade incentives to diplomatic conflict resolution may yield short-term success in pushing for ceasefire talks, especially as both countries seek favorable trade terms. However, if the pressure is perceived as coercive, it could complicate Washington’s role as a neutral mediator in future regional disputes. Trade disruptions may follow if ceasefire efforts fail.
