đź“„U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited controversy over the long-settled “Russiagate” investigation, accusing former President Barack Obama of orchestrating a coup against his presidency and calling for new investigations into the origins of the allegations.

During a joint press conference with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the White House, Trump abruptly shifted from addressing questions about the Jeffrey Epstein scandal to accusing Obama of being “the ringleader” behind what he described as a “treasonous conspiracy.”

“Obama is guilty. He led a coup,” Trump declared. “It’s time we deal with them.” He further claimed that the Russiagate investigation was fabricated by the Obama administration to sabotage his 2016 presidential campaign.

On July 21, Trump posted a digitally altered video of Obama being arrested by federal agents to his TruthSocial account, intensifying political backlash. The video follows remarks by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who claimed on July 18 that former Obama officials manipulated intelligence to suggest Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Despite multiple past investigations—by a bipartisan Senate committee and U.S. intelligence agencies—concluding that Russia did attempt to interfere in the 2016 election, a 2019 special counsel report by Robert Mueller found no evidence that Trump or his campaign colluded with the Kremlin.

Obama’s office responded to the renewed accusations, stating that “none of the recently disclosed information undermines the widely accepted conclusion that Russia interfered in the 2016 election, but did not succeed in altering the outcome.”

Critics argue that Trump’s renewed focus on Obama is a diversionary tactic, as public scrutiny over the Epstein scandal continues to escalate. Epstein, who was arrested for sex trafficking minors and died in jail in 2019, had well-documented ties to Trump.

Recently, Wall Street Journal reported that Trump allegedly sent Epstein a sexually explicit sketch in a letter. The report surfaced alongside growing calls from Trump’s supporters to release Epstein’s full client list. Former Attorney General Pam Bondi, who previously confirmed the list’s existence, has recently backtracked.

Trump has dismissed the Epstein allegations as a “witch hunt” and has filed a countersuit in response to related legal claims.

Analysts suggest Trump’s aggressive narrative shift could energize his political base, but also risks deepening legal vulnerabilities amid renewed interest in his past connections with Epstein. The controversy is expected to dominate headlines as the U.S. heads into the 2026 midterm election cycle.

The resurgence of Russiagate rhetoric and inflammatory attacks on Obama may further polarize the political landscape, potentially distracting from mounting legal and reputational threats surrounding Trump’s presidency.
