đź“° Syria Urges UN Security Council Emergency Meeting Over Israeli Airstrikes on Damascus
🗓️ July 17, 2025
📍 United Nations Headquarters, New York
đź“„Syria has officially requested an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in response to Israeli airstrikes targeting central Damascus, including areas near the Syrian Ministry of Defense and the presidential complex. The attacks occurred on July 16 local time and have further escalated tensions in the Middle East.
According to Reuters, the Syrian government made the urgent appeal for the UNSC to convene amid rising regional instability. The meeting is expected to take place as early as July 17.
The Israeli military confirmed the strike, stating it had targeted a “military headquarters near the presidential palace” and that the operation was successful. Syrian authorities reported that at least one person was killed and 18 others injured in the strike, which partially destroyed a four-story building adjacent to the Ministry of Defense.
Further airstrikes by Israel were also reported across southern Syria on the same day, including in Sweida and Daraa provinces. Israel justified its actions as retaliation for the alleged violent suppression of Druze civilians by Syrian government forces in the southern region.
UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric condemned the Israeli airstrikes, calling them a dangerous escalation. U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio expressed “grave concern” and reiterated that the United States is “in active dialogue with both parties to de-escalate the situation.”
The latest developments come amid mounting civilian casualties and internal conflict within Syria. Tensions have surged following months of violence between Syrian government forces and armed Druze groups in the south.
If the UN Security Council proceeds with the emergency session, sharp divisions among permanent members—especially between the U.S., Russia, and China—are likely to impede any consensus. Syria may leverage the meeting to build diplomatic pressure against Israel, but actionable resolutions remain unlikely. Meanwhile, Israel appears prepared to maintain military operations amid regional instability, which could lead to further confrontations and prolonged unrest in southern Syria.
