Sir Henry Royce’s journey from poverty to prestige is one of the most inspiring engineering stories of the 20th century. Born in 1863, he began working as a child to support his family, eventually taking a job as an apprentice at an electric company where he earned just a few shillings a week. With no access to formal education, Royce turned to night studies, learning about electrical systems, mechanics, and design entirely on his own. His first business venture — F.H. Royce and Company — produced electric fittings and motors, laying the foundation for what would become one of the greatest luxury engineering legacies in history.
What truly set Royce apart was his obsessive attention to detail and uncompromising standards. When he first repaired and redesigned a French Decauville car, he wasn’t content with fixing it — he improved it. This led to his first car, the Royce 10, and eventually to his fateful meeting with Charles Rolls. Together, they formed Rolls-Royce in 1904, producing cars so refined that they were famously known as “the best car in the world.” Royce also engineered the legendary Rolls-Royce Eagle aircraft engine, used in World War I and the first nonstop transatlantic flight in 1919. His relentless pursuit of perfection, despite a lack of formal education, not only shaped automotive and aviation history but redefined what craftsmanship meant in the modern era.
