📄 While much of Europe is sweltering under a record-breaking heatwave with temperatures soaring above 40°C, Russia is experiencing its coldest summer in over six decades.

According to the Russian Meteorological Service, the temperature in Moscow on July 1 was recorded at 14.3°C, the lowest for that date since 1962, when it dropped to 13.5°C.

Throughout mid to late June, daily highs in Moscow hovered between 13–19°C, with nighttime lows around 8–9°C, accompanied by near-daily rainfall.

Many Russians, who typically look forward to warm, sunny summers following long and harsh winters, have expressed disappointment with the unseasonably cold and wet conditions.

Even Russian President Vladimir Putin made light of the unusual weather during a recent government meeting, joking, “Winter is still far off, but at this rate, it may arrive early.”

Meteorologists attribute the chill to a strong polar low-pressure system, which is expected to persist in the near term. However, temperatures are forecasted to rise to 26–28°C by mid-July as the low-pressure front shifts away.

On the morning of July 3, Moscow’s temperature was 21°C, suggesting a gradual warming trend.

Russia’s atypical summer may lead to shifts in seasonal agricultural output, lower domestic energy demand for cooling, and revised planning for summer tourism. As northern climate anomalies become more frequent, long-term forecasts for Eurasia may require adjustment.

This contrast between Europe’s heatwave and Russia’s cold snap highlights the increasing unpredictability of weather patterns across the continent, reinforcing the importance of regional climate monitoring and adaptive infrastructure planning.
