đź“° Putin and Macron Hold First Call in Three Years, Discuss Ukraine and Iran
📍Moscow, Russia
Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron held a phone conversation in early July 2025, their first direct communication since September 11, 2022. The call lasted over two hours and covered a wide range of issues, including the war in Ukraine and nuclear tensions in the Middle East.
According to the Kremlin, President Putin told Macron that the conflict in Ukraine is the result of Western policies that have ignored Russia’s security concerns and supported what he described as an “anti-Russian outpost” in Ukraine. He also emphasized Russia’s “principled approach” toward a peaceful resolution—one that must address the root causes of the conflict and recognize the “realities on the ground,” referring to Russia’s claimed new territories.
The Élysée Palace reported that Macron reaffirmed France’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He stressed that a ceasefire should be reached quickly and that peace talks must begin to ensure a lasting resolution.
The two leaders also discussed the situation in the Middle East, particularly growing tensions between Iran and Israel following the U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Putin and Macron agreed on the importance of coordination between Russia and France, especially as permanent members of the UN Security Council, in maintaining global peace and security.
Putin highlighted the importance of upholding Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear development under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), while also emphasizing cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Both leaders called for political and diplomatic solutions to the Iranian nuclear crisis and other regional conflicts. They agreed to maintain communication and coordinate positions moving forward.
President Macron’s renewed outreach to Putin is seen as a strategic move, acknowledging Russia’s key role in resolving Iran’s nuclear issue, despite Moscow’s continued military operations in Ukraine. Macron reiterated that Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons is “completely unacceptable” and that any nuclear negotiations must proceed through diplomatic channels.
