📄Ukrainian intelligence officials believe North Korea may be preparing to deploy an additional 25,000 to 30,000 troops to Russia to support ongoing combat operations against Ukraine.

The personnel could reportedly arrive within months, with Russian defense forces expected to provide equipment, weaponry, and logistical support for full integration into Russian military units. The deployments are believed to be focused on territories in eastern Ukraine currently under Russian control, where a large-scale offensive is anticipated.

Ukraine’s intelligence assessment suggests Russia is retrofitting military transport aircraft to accommodate the inbound North Korean personnel. Satellite imagery shows troop transport vessels of the same type used in last year’s deployments arriving at Dunay military port near Vladivostok on May 18. On June 4, another aircraft, possibly an IL-76, was spotted at Pyongyang Sunan International Airport, potentially involved in the new deployment.

Some experts suggest the estimated figure may be inflated. However, analysts agree that North Korea has the manpower capacity to provide tens of thousands of soldiers if necessary. The troops, while not elite forces, could meet Russia’s demand for reinforcements. It has also been rumored that Russian generals have conducted training sessions inside North Korea in recent months.

Adding to the military collaboration, on June 17, Russia’s National Security Secretary met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang. During the visit, North Korea reportedly committed to sending 6,000 military engineers and construction personnel to assist in rebuilding the Russian city of Kursk.

If North Korea proceeds with a large-scale troop deployment, it would mark a profound escalation in Pyongyang’s involvement in the Ukraine war. This could trigger diplomatic backlash and potentially reshuffle the dynamics of the conflict, drawing attention to the growing Russia–North Korea axis.

North Korea’s deepening military cooperation with Russia signals a strategic alignment that extends far beyond weapons supplies—this is boots on the ground, and the battlefield may soon bear their footprint.
