📄Iran has agreed to resume nuclear negotiations with the three European countries known as the E3 — Germany, France, and the United Kingdom — according to Tasnim News Agency, a semi-official Iranian outlet.

This development comes about a month after nuclear talks between the United States and Iran, which began in April, were suspended last month due to escalating armed conflicts between Israel and Iran, as well as U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Sources indicated that a consensus on the principles of negotiation has been reached, but discussions regarding the timing and location of the talks remain ongoing. The earliest possible resumption is expected as soon as next week, with plans for a deputy minister-level meeting.

The move follows a warning issued on July 17 by the French Foreign Ministry on behalf of the E3 and the European Union, threatening to implement a “snapback” mechanism if progress in nuclear talks is not achieved.

The snapback clause is part of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed by Iran and Western powers. It allows for reinstating UN sanctions if Iran fails to halt or limit its nuclear program as agreed. Notably, the snapback can be activated even without unanimous consent from the UN Security Council’s permanent members, designed to override vetoes from allies like Russia and China.

The E3 countries are key parties to the 2015 nuclear deal and play a central role in ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Since April, Iran and the U.S. under President Donald Trump have conducted five rounds of nuclear talks, but the process stalled amid disagreements over uranium enrichment limits.

Tensions further escalated last month when, two days before the planned sixth round, the Israeli military launched an airstrike on Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility, causing talks to halt. Nine days later, the U.S. struck multiple Iranian nuclear sites including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan with bunker-busting bombs.

Following a ceasefire agreement with Israel on June 24 at Trump’s behest, Iran announced intentions to continue uranium enrichment and temporarily suspended cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) — while leaving diplomatic channels open for further negotiation.

The resumption of talks with the E3 suggests a cautious diplomatic thaw, though major hurdles remain, particularly concerning uranium enrichment and verification mechanisms. The coming weeks will be critical to whether Iran and European powers can bridge their differences and possibly pave the way for renewed engagement with the U.S.

Iran’s agreement to restart nuclear negotiations with Germany, France, and the U.K. signals a tentative step toward de-escalation in a complex geopolitical landscape marked by recent military confrontations and sanctions threats.
