Bringing relief from the scorching heat, the UAE experienced its first summer hail on Saturday evening in parts of Al Ain, including Khatm Al Shakla and Malaqit. The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) reported moderate to heavy rainfall, with lighter showers in Al Nabah, Um Gaffa, and Al Dhahir. The Storm Center shared visuals of hail from Al-Shakla canal and Al-Zuhrub in nearby Mahda, Oman.
Meteorologists explained that summer hail occurs due to strong updrafts in convective clouds that push moisture into colder upper layers of the atmosphere. The rare weather comes after extreme heat, with temperatures recently soaring to 49.9°C in Mezaira.
NCM also issued yellow and orange alerts, warning residents of potential hazards. Hail has hit the UAE before, but summer hail remains an unusual and refreshing phenomenon amidst record-breaking heat.
