📄A volcano has erupted once more on Iceland’s southwestern Reykjanes Peninsula, marking the 12th volcanic event in the country since early 2021 and the ninth in the same region since late 2023. The eruption began around 3:56 AM local time, with a 700–1,000-meter fissure opening at the surface of the Synhnjúkur crater, according to Iceland’s Meteorological Office.

By midday, the fissure had extended to 2.4 kilometers, while a second nearby fissure, approximately 500 meters long, also appeared—spewing molten lava and volcanic gases from both ends.

The affected crater lies between the fishing village of Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon, a famous geothermal spa resort. Authorities reported that around 100 people were evacuated from the vicinity for safety reasons.

This event follows a series of eruptions that began in December 2023, when approximately 4,000 residents were forced to flee Grindavík. Since then, most of the homes in the area have been purchased by the government, with only a few residents remaining in the town.

The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, RUV, reported that the current eruption is unlikely to disrupt international flights or airport operations.

Iceland’s frequent volcanic activity continues to test the country’s geological monitoring and emergency preparedness systems. The proximity to key tourist infrastructure like the Blue Lagoon highlights the delicate balance between public safety and economic stability.

Unless lava flows reach critical infrastructure, broader disruption is unlikely. However, the ongoing geological instability suggests that further eruptions remain probable in the near future. Continued monitoring of seismic patterns will be vital, and future evacuations may occur with little warning.
