The incident occurred on July 8 in the village of Derbyshki, where initial reports described the crash as a “small aircraft accident.” However, it was later clarified that the object was in fact a large military-grade unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

The Ural Civil Aviation Plant, responsible for developing the drone, stated that the 5-ton Altius drone had been flying normally until it suffered a loss of satellite navigation control. The failure was reportedly caused by external electronic warfare interference of unknown origin, preventing the UAV from executing a proper landing.

Though no injuries were reported, the crash ignited a fire at the impact site, and footage of the burning wreckage has since circulated online.

The Altius UAV has been in development since 2011 under orders from Russia’s Ministry of Defense. With a wingspan of 28 meters and a fuselage length of 11.6 meters, the drone is designed to carry up to 1,000 kilograms of weapons and has a maximum range of 10,000 kilometers. It is promoted as Russia’s strategic counterpart to the U.S. MQ-9 Reaper.

The crash may delay further testing and deployment of the Altius drone and raise concerns about Russia’s defense-grade UAV reliability—especially in the presence of enemy jamming. The incident highlights the growing vulnerability of high-tech military assets to electronic warfare and could prompt revisions to Russia’s UAV navigation and resilience protocols.
