Europe has launched its first dedicated offshore CO₂ carrier as part of Project Greensand, a bold initiative to combat climate change by capturing and permanently storing carbon dioxide under the seabed. Developed by INEOS Energy and Wagenborg Offshore, this vessel will transport up to 400,000 tons of CO₂ annually to the Danish North Sea, where the gas will be injected into geological formations 1,800 meters below the seafloor.
This is just the beginning. With $150+ million already invested, Project Greensand aims to expand to a staggering 8 million tons of CO₂ stored per year by 2030—the equivalent of removing over 1.7 million cars from the roads. It’s a key pillar in Europe’s broader strategy to reach net-zero emissions and demonstrates how maritime infrastructure is evolving to support climate resilience.
