On the night of July 6, Russia launched one of its most intense air attacks in recent weeks, targeting various Ukrainian regions using a mix of long-range missiles, S-300 systems, and a large wave of Iranian-made Shahed attack drones.

According to Ukrainian defense authorities, over 98 Shahed drones were successfully intercepted, marking one of the highest interception rates recorded this month. The coordinated defense operation demonstrated Ukraine’s increasing capability to detect and neutralize aerial threats under pressure.

However, Ukrainian military reports also revealed a troubling development: Russia deployed “decoy drones”—unmanned aerial vehicles designed to appear as genuine threats. The use of decoy drones alongside real munitions suggests that Russia is investing in hybrid airstrike tactics to degrade Ukrainian air defense efficiency. While Ukraine’s high interception rate is a positive sign, continued adaptation will be necessary to counter increasingly sophisticated attacks, especially as Russia tests the limits of detection and response capabilities.
