📄 Israel has rejected proposed amendments by Hamas to the U.S.-backed ceasefire plan for the Gaza Strip, according to an official statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office on October 6.

The statement confirmed receipt of Hamas’ proposed changes but declared them unacceptable. Nonetheless, it affirmed that Israel’s negotiation delegation would proceed with planned talks in Qatar.

Sources involved in the mediation effort disclosed that Hamas’ amendments include three key demands, and that Hamas intends to continue negotiations toward a permanent ceasefire until an agreement is reached. The group also pledged to resume full humanitarian supply deliveries with support from the United Nations and international relief organizations, and called for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to withdraw to pre-March 2023 positions prior to the previous failed ceasefire talks.

Earlier, Hamas had announced a “positive response” to the ceasefire proposal led by U.S. President Donald Trump. The original plan calls for a 60-day cessation of hostilities, the release of 10 surviving hostages and the return of 18 deceased hostages by Hamas, in exchange for Israel releasing a number of Palestinian prisoners.

CNN reported that the new ceasefire proposal closely resembles previous plans but includes two major compromises: Hamas would release hostages gradually over the ceasefire period, rather than all at once, and President Trump would personally guarantee the ceasefire’s continuation even if a comprehensive peace agreement is not finalized by the end of the 60 days.

While talks are expected to proceed soon in Qatar, it remains unclear if the 21-month-long conflict will come to an end. Past ceasefire attempts have failed over irreconcilable details. Hamas demands a permanent ceasefire and full Israeli withdrawal, while Israel prioritizes dismantling Hamas’ military power and governance in Gaza, making a final resolution difficult.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military continued intensive airstrikes on Gaza on October 5 before sending the ceasefire delegation.

The Guardian reported at least 24 Palestinian deaths on that day, citing Gaza medical officials. Among them were seven casualties—including a Palestinian doctor and three children—when an airstrike hit a tent in Mawashi, Gaza’s southern coastal area. Additional fatalities occurred in Khan Yunis and nearby Bani Suheila. Medical sources also reported 10 Palestinians killed en route to a relief distribution center.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet President Trump at the White House on October 7. Reports suggest that Trump is expected to personally announce the ceasefire, with hopes the agreement will be finalized before Netanyahu’s visit.

The Hamas offensive on October 7, 2023, resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths in Israel and the abduction of 251 hostages. Currently, about 50 hostages remain, though more than half are presumed deceased.

Israel responded immediately, vowing to destroy Hamas. Since then, at least 57,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians and minors, have died in Gaza, according to the United Nations and international aid organizations.

Ceasefire negotiations face significant hurdles due to deep mistrust and divergent demands. While a temporary truce may be agreed upon soon, durable peace remains elusive. Continued military operations and humanitarian crises in Gaza are likely to persist unless breakthroughs occur.

The ongoing stalemate between Israel and Hamas underscores the complexity of achieving peace in the region. International mediation efforts, including U.S. involvement, remain critical but fragile. The humanitarian toll and political tensions will continue shaping the conflict’s trajectory in the near future.
