📄 At least 27 people have been confirmed dead and approximately 20 children remain missing after record-breaking rainfall caused catastrophic flooding in central Texas, local authorities reported on July 5.

The flooding was triggered by over 300 mm of rain falling within just four hours on July 4, overwhelming the Guadalupe River and submerging homes, roads, and entire communities. Local meteorologists described the deluge as a “once-in-a-century” rainfall event.

Among the casualties are nine children. Emergency responders rescued at least 237 people using helicopters and high-water vehicles. However, approximately 20 children from the Christian girls’ summer camp “Camp Mystic” remain unaccounted for, prompting a large-scale search operation.

While water levels in the Guadalupe River have slightly receded, intermittent rainfall continues, and flood warnings remain in effect for several regions.

In a social media statement today, U.S. President Donald Trump said, “The Trump administration is working closely with state and local agencies in Texas to respond to yesterday’s tragic flooding,” adding that DHS Secretary Kristi Noem would soon visit the affected areas.

Ongoing rainfall may hinder search and rescue operations and further raise the risk of flash floods in surrounding counties. Federal disaster declarations and emergency aid packages are expected. The number of casualties may increase if missing children are not located swiftly.

The Texas floods represent one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent state history. The large number of missing children, particularly from a single summer camp, highlights the vulnerability of organized youth programs to extreme weather events. Continued federal and local coordination will be critical in the coming days.
