In a historic move, Denmark has officially begun enforcing mandatory military conscription for women starting July 1, 2025, becoming one of the first European Union nations to fully integrate women into the draft system alongside men. The policy, which was approved earlier this year, comes as part of a broader national defense reform in response to escalating threats from the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war.

Under the new law, all Danish citizens—regardless of gender—who turn 18 after July 1 will be eligible for conscription through a lottery system, mirroring the selection process already applied to men. Previously, military service for women was voluntary. Now, it is legally required for those randomly selected.

The length of mandatory service has also been extended from four months to eleven months, including five months of basic training and six months of operational deployment. The Danish government aims to increase the number of conscripts from 4,700 to 6,500 annually by 2033.

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated that the reform is essential for strengthening national security and meeting NATO commitments, especially in light of the “changed geopolitical landscape in Europe.” Denmark is also preparing to deploy more troops and resources to the Baltic region in coordination with allied nations.

The move has sparked both praise and debate. Supporters argue it promotes gender equality in national defense, while critics warn of potential strain on the military system and societal pushback.

Nevertheless, today marks a significant milestone in Denmark’s defense strategy—a symbolic and practical step toward building a more inclusive and resilient military force.
