Heavy monsoon rains have recently battered several regions across Pakistan and India, marking the full onset of the monsoon season and causing significant casualties and damage.

Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed at least 45 deaths and 68 injuries due to intense rainfall over a four-day period from June 26 to 29.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwest Pakistan, bordering Afghanistan, suffered the highest fatalities with 21 deaths, including 10 children. Among these, 14 people died in a family tragedy caused by flooding along the Swat River valley.

Punjab province, Pakistan’s most populous region adjacent to India, reported 13 deaths—eight of which were children who died from collapsing walls or roofs caused by heavy rain, and others lost in flash floods.

Sindh and Balochistan provinces in southern Pakistan also saw 11 fatalities related to the heavy rains. Across Pakistan, NDMA reported 89 houses damaged and 55 livestock deaths over the period.

Last month alone, heavy rain and strong winds in Pakistan caused at least 32 deaths.

In India’s northern Himachal Pradesh state, 34 people died, 4 remain missing, and 74 were injured over nine days due to severe rains. Damage to government buildings, roads, and homes is significant.

In South Asia, monsoon rains typically span from June to September annually. While beneficial for cooling intense heat and supporting crop growth, inadequate drainage and sewage systems in the region often exacerbate the risks of flooding and fatalities.

Pakistan faced unprecedented floods and rains in 2022 that claimed over 1,700 lives, with enormous economic losses.
