📄 Thirteen civilians were killed and four others wounded following a brutal attack by Boko Haram militants in northeastern Nigeria, local authorities announced on July 6.

The attack took place in the remote village of Mallam Fatori, located near Nigeria’s eastern border with Chad, approximately 270 kilometers from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. Governor Babagana Zulum confirmed that nine civilians were found dead at the scene, while four later succumbed to their injuries.

Although the exact time of the attack was not disclosed, Zulum issued a stern warning, stating, “Anyone who attacks or collaborates with armed groups to harm residents in Mallam Fatori will be punished.” He also noted that security forces are preparing for potential follow-up attacks.

Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have waged an insurgency against the Nigerian government since 2009. The region has witnessed a surge in violence in recent months, including roadside bombings and direct assaults on military bases.

The resurgence of Boko Haram activity signals a deteriorating security climate in northeastern Nigeria. Analysts warn that unless urgent counterinsurgency measures are taken, civilian casualties may rise and border communities could face mass displacement.

The Nigerian government is under growing pressure to stabilize the region, protect vulnerable populations, and restore control over contested rural areas.
